Frequently Asked Questions

Please see below for some of the more commonly asked questions, if you need more information please call or email us.

What Size Does My Image Need To Be.

Why is Image Size So Important?
Image size is the amount information on your photo. The more information (Pixels) there are on the file the better the quality & the larger we can print it. If we try to produce a large photo from a small amount of information (pixels) we will end up with a blurred & pixelated image.
Example photo (far left) which has lots of information/pixels. No problems to enlarge.
See (left) example of photo with small amount of information/pixels, would only be good for a passport size photo.
Why is this photo not clear?
This photo doesnt have a lot of information/pixels. If this photo were to be enlarged extra pixels are not created. The existing ones are just made bigger thus creating a big blurry enlargement.
So please when taking photos set your camera to its highest resolution, heaps of information/pixels. So if you capture that perfect shot, and you would love to have it enlarged & printed, you are able to.

You can downsize a photo file easily enough if you need to email it, but you cannot make a photo file bigger and obtain a good quality enlargement.
What size does my photo file need to be?
Without getting bogged down in too much technical jargon.
To produce a good A1 size photo poster the file would need to be at least 4 Megabytes,
For an A2 at least 3Mb.
For an A3 at least 2Mb
For an A4 at least 1Mb.
Same as above for A3 & A4 jigsaw puzzles.
For An A5 jigsaw .5Mb or 500 Kb.
For the photo impressions onto jewellery, file size of around 1mb is ok.
How do I tell how big my file is?
When you are in My Pictures (XP) or Pictures (Vista), hover your mouse over the thumbnail of the picture you would like to upload, a small box will appear giving information on that photo. At the bottom of that box it will say Size. That is the file size of Your Image.
How many megapixels does my camera need to be?
As a rough guide a 8 megapixel camera set to its highest resolution will give a 4 Megabyte picture file, so would be fine for an A1 photo poster.

Uploading.

What type of image can I upload & how long will it take.
The images must be in JPEG format. Files of this type will have an ending similar to *.jpg or *.jpe.

Image files can be quite large depending on the type of camera you use. These days even relatively cheap digital cameras can give high resoluton images with 5mb or more image files. The following guide will give a rough idea of how long it will take to upload an Image file.

For example if your file is uploaded at dial up speed (56kb) it will take approximately:

2min for a .5mb file: (4min/1mb) (7min/1.5mb) (9min/2mb) (14min/3mb)

If you have ADSL 256kb.
1min for a .5mb file: (2min/1mb) (3min/1.5mb) (4min/2mb) (6min/3mb)

These times will no doubt vary, depending on your location and amount of internet traffic.

Cropping

Why are some of my Images cropped.
The reason that Your Image may be cropped is that digital cameras take photos in 4:3 aspect, whereas the old 35mm cameras take photos in 3:2 aspect. Unfortunately most photo print sizes (eg 6"x 4") suit the 3:2 aspect. So the reason for possible cropping is to get your image to fill the whole frame. Sometimes if the image is not cropped, you would end up with either a white strip at the top & bottom or the sides. However we endeavour to keep cropping to an absolute minimum, this may involve slightly altering the aspect of the image.
